Can you feel the crispness in the air? It’s the perfect weather for comfort food, and three groups in town are serving up the best Duryea has to offer.

Starting off the week, the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 585 will have a stuffed pepper dinner from noon to 6 p.m. (or sold out) Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Brennan Regan Post 585 home, 329 Main St. Dinners are $7 and includes a stuffed pepper, mashed potatoes with gravy and a roll. Take outs will be available, too.

Next up is St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church’s harvest dinner. It will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, in the parish hall, 200 Stephenson St.

The menu will feature chicken, ziti, meatballs, mashed potatoes, vegetable, roll with butter, dessert and a beverage.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger. Takeouts will be available, too.

And rounding out these special events, Nativity of Our Lord Parish will sponsor a take-out barbeque dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 18, in Sacred Heart Hall, 529 Stephenson St.

Dinners are $10 each and include a choice of two beef or pork barbeque sandwiches, a bag of chips and a piece of homemade cake. Orders can be picked up from 4 to 6 p.m. in the hall. To place an order, call the rectory at 570-457-3502 during business hours. All orders must be placed by Friday, Oct. 13.

Holy Rosary news

Holy Rosary’s youngest students have certainly been busy sharpening their social and academic skills. The kindergarten and first grade students recently honored their grandparents or another special adult in their life with a performance of songs followed by a dinner social.

The first grade class learned a bit of Americana in class by celebrating Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. Students learned about the legendary pioneer who spread his love for apples by planting seeds throughout our great country.

SAL activities

Sons of the American Legion Squadron 585 will hold its monthly meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Brennan Regan Post 585 home, 329 Main St. Plans will be finalized for children’s Halloween party. All members are asked to attend.

The children’s Halloween costume party will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the post home.

The party is open to children, grandchildren and step-children ages infant to 12 years old of SALs, regular, auxiliary and social members. Prizes will be awarded for best costume in each age category. The children will be treated to hot dogs, pizza, snacks, beverages and a candy goody bag.

All children must be registered by Thursday, Oct. 26. To register, call the Legion at 570-457-4242.

Nativity of Our Lord news

In deference to the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, Nativity of Our Lord Parish will gather following the 7 p.m. Mass on Sunday, Oct. 8, for the customary rosary and a candlelight procession to the outdoor shrine of Our Lady on the parish grounds, 127 Stephenson St.

The parish will have its annual day of Solemn Eucharistic Adoration on Monday, Oct. 16, in the church, 127 Stephenson St. The Eucharist will be exposed following the 7 a.m. Mass until Evening Prayer and Benediction at 7 p.m.

During October, the parish will pray the rosary beginning 25 minutes before each Sunday Mass. These prayers will be offered for vocations to the priesthood and religious life, particularly in the Diocese of Scranton.

Legion auxiliary news

American Legion Auxiliary Brennan Regan Post 585 will have its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the post home, 329 Main St.

The auxiliary will have a chili, soup and bake sale from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at the post home. Chili is $5.50 and soup is $4.50. The chili and all soups are homemade with assorted varieties. The bake sale will have assorted pastries. Take outs will be available, too.

Lions craft festival

Avoca and Duryea Lions Clubs will sponsor a fall festival craft and vendor fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Germania Hose Company, 430 Foote Ave.

There will be more than 35 crafters and vendors, a large selection of raffles and basket items and food. Admission and parking are free. All proceeds will benefit Lions Club charitable causes.

Holy Rosary purse bingo

Holy Rosary School’s Parent Teacher Organization is sponsoring a designer purse bingo Sunday, Oct. 22, at Eagle McClure Hose Company No. 1, 375 Milwaukee Ave., Old Forge. Doors open at 11 a.m. and games begin at 1 p.m.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Legion Halloween party

American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585 will have its annual Halloween costume party and contest for adults from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Oct. 28, at the post home, 329 Main St. Prizes will be awarded. The kitchen will be open. Entertainment will be provided by Flatland Ruckus. The public is invited to attend.

VFW Halloween party

Duryea Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227 will host a Halloween costume party at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the post home, 492 Stephenson St. Prizes will be awarded for costumes in various categories. Entertainment will be provided by the Midnight Rhythm Band.

Children’s story hour

Duryea’s My Little Library program will hold a story hour at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St. The event is free and open to children with up to an eighth grade reading level. Future story hours will take place on the first Wednesday of each month through April.

Each story hour will have a celebrity reader who will read an age appropriate book or excerpt and then give a brief show and tell. November’s celebrity reader is Duryea Mayor Keith Moss who will read and talk about the history of Duryea.

My Little Library can be found in front of the municipal building and in front of the Community Park, Stephenson Street. It is a “take a book, give a book” program for children.

Food assistance

The monthly distribution of non-perishable food items delivered from the food bank will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in the parish hall in the lower level of Holy Rosary Church of Nativity of Our Lord Parish, 125 Stephenson St. Anyone who cannot access the hall stairs or place items in their vehicles, can make advance arrangements for assistance. Deliveries are not available.

Individuals and households who meet the family size, household income and residency guidelines should contact Lois Hanczyc at 570-457-2482 to complete the necessary registration materials by Monday, Nov. 5. Anyone not interested in being enrolled any longer should contact Lois to be removed from the list.

The income guidelines, which include household size and annual, monthly and weekly income, are as follows: one person, $17,505 annually, $1,459 monthly and $337 weekly; two people, $23,595, $1,966 and $454; three people, $29,685, $2,474 and $571; four people, $35,775, $2,981 and $688. For each additional person add $6,090, $508 and $117.

In order to qualify for future distributions, individuals and households must register by the Monday prior to the distribution date. During the distribution time, the registered member of the household is required to bring a valid driver’s license or photo ID, as well as proof of residence, such as a bill, report card or official documentation for each member of the household. Failure to provide necessary documentation required by CEO Food Bank will result in no distribution at the time of pick up.

Christmas Stroll

Save the date! The third annual Duryea Christmas Stroll down Main Street will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9.

Join in kicking off the holiday season with Santa, Mrs. Claus and Duryea’s Main Street businesses with an evening of fun, shopping, children’s activities, Christmas treats and more.

SAL beer raffle

Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 585, is sponsoring its annual beer raffle.

Tickets, which are $3 each or two for $5, can be purchased from any member or at the post home.

The prizes include: first prize, $500 Quality Beverage gift card; second prize, $200 Wine & Spirits Shop gift card; third prize, $50 Komensky’s Market gift card, and fourth prize, $50 Arturo’s Restaurant gift card.

The drawing is at 11 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16.

SMART Recovery

SMART Recovery’s Bi-Weekly Support Group meets from 5:45 to 7 p.m. the first and third Monday of the month, at Nativity of Our Lord Parish Hall, (formerly Sacred Heart Hall), 529 Stephenson St. Duryea.

SMART Recovery’s 4-Point Program helps people recover from all types of substance use disorders, or any unwanted behaviors. This includes alcohol/drugs, prescription drugs, nicotine, co-dependency, compulsive overeating, or any behavior change.

Al-Anon meetings

Al-Anon meets at 7 p.m. Thursdays at the Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave. This is an anonymous 12-step program of recovery for families and friends of addicts and alcoholics. There are no dues or fees. Meetings last approximately one hour. The public is invited.
